A youth arrested on charges of producing and uploading abusive YouTube content targeting Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah and other political leaders has been released.

Police had detained Roshan Pokharel of Phalgunanda Rural Municipality–7, Panchthar, on allegations of cyber-related offences. He was later handed over to his family on the condition that he would appear before authorities whenever required, according to the District Police Office, Panchthar.

He had earlier been remanded by the Panchthar District Court for 10 days for further investigation under cybercrime laws.

Following his arrest, criticism surfaced on social media alleging an attempt to curb freedom of expression, after which police released him while investigation continues.
