Kathmandu — Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Sampang has opposed the government’s move to clear squatter settlements.

On Monday, after visiting the squatter settlement in Thapathali, Kathmandu that had been removed by authorities, Chair Rai said that the government’s policy of forcing poor and landless citizens onto the streets is unacceptable.

He stressed that squatters are also Nepali citizens and demanded that their basic rights to food, shelter, and clothing be guaranteed.

He said, “Squatters must not be displaced. They are also Nepali citizens. This country belongs to the poor as well. Poor citizens must not be forced to live on the streets. Our demand is that proper housing arrangements be made for the poor.”
