Janakpurdham — Krishna Prasad Yadav, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Madhesh Province, has taken the oath of office and secrecy today.

On Sunday, at a programme held at the office of the Province Chief, Chief Minister Yadav was sworn in by Province Chief Surendra Labh Karna as the sixth Chief Minister.

Yadav — leader of the provincial parliamentary party of the Nepali Congress — became Chief Minister with the support of 77 provincial-assembly members from six parties.

He was appointed after, on Friday, he staked his claim to form a government with support from the parties including Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP-Nepal), Janamat Party, CPN (Maoist Centre), Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal and CPN (Unified Socialist). Following this claim, Province Chief Karna appointed him.

Earlier, the previous Chief Minister (named Saroj Kumar Yadav) had resigned because he was unable to secure a vote of confidence within 24 hours of a Supreme Court order, under Article 168 of Nepal’s constitution.

After his resignation, as per the constitutional provision (Article 168(2)), the process to form a new government was called and Krishna Prasad Yadav was selected as the new Chief Minister.

About a month ago as well, Yadav was in line to become Chief Minister, but the alliance changed when the Janamat Party withdrew support — then Jitendra Prasad Sonal (Sonal) had assumed office. But the shifting alliances led to yet another change.
