Kathmandu – Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitoula has announced that he will work to thwart the special general convention called by the general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishweshwor Prakash Sharma. The two general secretaries had summoned a special general convention in Kathmandu from Poush 26–28. Sitoula, aligned with the party establishment, told reporters on Monday that the special convention was unnecessary and must be stopped.

Sitoula said, “We will not let the special general convention happen. It should not be held. I urge the delegates who signed for the convention not to come to Kathmandu.”

He added that the party should focus instead on preparing for the election scheduled for Falgun 21. “I call on my colleagues to now focus on election preparation. The desire for the Congress party to split or become weak will not come true,” Sitoula said.

Sitoula, who is also a candidate from the establishment side for party chairmanship, remarked that the regular general convention scheduled for Baisakh 28 would be more beneficial for the party. He also revealed that the party is likely to form an alliance with either the UML or the NCP for the National Assembly elections.

He said Congress, UML, and NCP are in talks about a three-party alliance and are close to reaching consensus. “There will be some alignment with a party in the National Assembly election; today we will know in which provinces Congress will get seats,” he said.
