The postponement of the Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention, originally scheduled next month , has become all but certain as the party struggles to complete its active membership verification on time.

This was near general agreement of the central office bearers of the party after General Secretary  Gagan Thapa informed them that the verification process would not be completed according to the previously set schedule. Most leaders present suggested that the convention timetable be revised, party spokesperson Prakasharan Mahat told journalists after the meeting held at Party Headquarters at Sanepa.

The three day general convention was scheduled to begin from January 10 . The delay in finalization of active membership and ward-level conventions planned from January 3. had its chain reaction leading to the alteration of the date of the convention. The new date has however. not been finalized yet.

Speaking at the meeting, Mahat said many leaders emphasized the need for a practical and realistic schedule for the general convention. General Secretary Thapa proposed holding ward and regional conventions first, followed directly by the central general convention.

Acting Chairman of the Party Purna  Bahadur Khadka warned that the ongoing  election-related obligations — from finalizing the proportional representation candidate list for the House of Representatives to nominating contenders for the National Assembly ; may have its direct impact on the General convention of the party. General Secretary Thapa also brief on the procedure of holding general convention as well as active membership finalisation  process. The Executive Committee will finalise proportional representation and National Assembly candidates when it resumes the meeting Thursday.
