Government Prepares to Appoint Officials to Constitutional Bodies, Recommends Ordinance

Kathmandu – The interim election government led by Sushila Karki is preparing to make appointments to constitutional bodies.

The government has decided to recommend to President Ramchandra Poudel an ordinance to amend the Constitutional Council (Functions, Duties, Powers, and Procedures) Act, 2066.

At a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, it decided to recommend to the President the issuance of the Constitutional Council (Functions, Duties, Powers, and Procedures) Amendment Ordinance, 2082.

There are vacant posts in constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, the Finance Commission, and the National Human Rights Commission.

The government is moving forward with preparations to fill those vacancies. According to the constitutional arrangement, appointments recommended by the Constitutional Council must first be approved by the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

As per the constitutional provisions, the Council is composed of the Prime Minister as its chair, the Chief Justice, the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker of the House, and the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the National Assembly.
