Kathmandu — Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has expressed concern that holding the party’s general convention immediately before the upcoming elections could negatively affect the electoral outcome due to internal competition.

Although he has been advising party leaders accordingly, Deuba made it clear that he will not obstruct the convention if a decision is taken to hold it ahead of elections

In a meeting with journalists in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Deuba stated that he will not be a contestant in the 15th general convention and will adopt a neutral role. According to him, party rules prohibit him from standing as a candidate for the presidency, and he has no personal desire to do so, adding that he will encourage other leaders instead.

“I have been saying that holding the general convention before the elections could impact the party because of internal competition,” Deuba said. “But if it is to be held, I am not in a position to stop it.”

Deuba also dismissed the possibility of calling a special general convention. He argued that a special convention might spark fresh disputes over procedures and methods, and therefore it would be more appropriate to reach consensus within the framework of the regular convention.
