Attempted attack on Mahesh Basnet, two youths arrested

Kathmandu – There was an attempted attack on UML leader Mahesh Basnet.

Basnet, who was headed to attend a Youth Federation program in Sunsari, was allegedly targeted near Biratnagar Airport in Morang around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Morang Police spokesman DSP Kopila Dulal, the vehicle Basnet was traveling in — registration number Ba 17 Cha 5961 — was attacked.

A public video shows the vehicle being attacked, but the police are still investigating whether stones or some other objects were thrown.

Two youths have been detained in connection with the incident: 25-year-old Sanjog Gautam from Ward 1 of Biratnagar Metropolitan City, and 19-year-old Arpit Kunwar from Ward 2.

Basnet was supposed to travel via Biratnagar Airport on his way to Sunsari, but when he arrived, some youths gathered outside the airport and protested.

It was during this protest that the attempted attack on Basnet took place.
