Dhangadhi — In the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21, Kailali-5 has emerged as a battleground featuring an all-new slate of candidates, with no incumbent running for re-election.

The major contenders include Nara Narayan Shah of the Nepali Congress, Yagya Dhungana of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Prem Ale representing the Nepal Communist Party, and Ananda Bahadur Chand of the Rastriya Swatantra Party — all of whom are contesting in this constituency for the first time.

Earlier discussions had centered on Congress leader Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, who previously lost an election here, but following the party’s leadership changes, she was not nominated and the ticket went instead to Shah.

Dhungana, the UML’s district chair, has entered the race with party backing, while Ale — a former minister from Doti — is fielded by the Nepal Communist Party as its candidate for Kailali-5.

Ananda Bahadur Chand, a PhD scholar and RSP nominee, adds further competitiveness to the field, representing an alternative party outside Nepal’s traditional political duopoly.

Historically, electoral outcomes in this constituency have swung between parties: Congress candidates have won four times, UML twice and the Maoists once since 2048 BS.

Kailali-5 includes 19 wards of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City and two in Kailari Rural Municipality, and combines a mix of urban voters and settlers from across Nepal, making it one of the more diverse constituencies in Sudurpashchim Province.
