Kathmandu — According to a United Nations proclamation, ‘World Meditation Day’ is being observed today. The United Nations had declared December 21 as World Meditation Day. Nepal is also marking this day accordingly.

The UN General Assembly has recognized yoga and meditation as complementary practices for health and well-being.

Last year, on December 7, the UN officially endorsed December 21 as World Meditation Day. On that occasion, the first celebration was held at Tundikhel under a government program. This year as well, the day is being observed through a government-organized event.

Advocates in the field say Nepal should be developed as the world’s ‘capital of meditation’. After over eleven years of continuous effort, the United Nations granted official recognition to the Meditation Day proposal, which was first put forward in 2014. After a proposal co-sponsored by Nepal and other countries was passed by the UN General Assembly last December, the day began to be observed.

On this occasion, this morning the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology organized a program at the Military Ground, Tundikhel.

Similarly, in Brahmananda Saraswati Village in Bosan, South Kali Municipality-1, there will be an interactive session on meditation followed by a group meditation program. Other concerned agencies have also organized various events today to mark the occasion.
