Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the powerful head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most dominant drug trafficking organisations. The cartel leader was seriously wounded during a special military operation in Tapalpa, in the state of Jalisco, and later died while being flown to Mexico City for treatment.

Oseguera’s death has set off a wave of violent unrest across several Mexican states, as cartel members and supporters launched retaliatory attacks. Organized criminal groups burned vehicles, blocked highways with burning barricades and targeted key infrastructure, prompting authorities to warn that parts of the country resemble war zones.

According to Mexico’s Defence Ministry, El Mencho was killed along with several of his associates during the operation, while some security personnel were also wounded. The CJNG’s violent backlash has included arson attacks on supermarkets, petrol stations and other commercial sites, leading some major airlines to cancel flights in affected regions.

The CJNG, founded around 2007, had grown into one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal syndicates, trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and other drugs into the United States and operating across large swathes of both countries. The U.S. government had offered up to $15 million for information leading to El Mencho’s capture.

Amid the escalating unrest, several foreign governments, including India’s Embassy in Mexico City, have issued advisories urging their citizens to stay indoors and avoid affected regions while security operations continue.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the operation in a social media post and called for calm, saying that most of the country remains peaceful, even as security forces work to restore stability.
