U.S. President Donald Trump has recalled American ambassadors from 30 countries, including Nepal. The ambassadors were “career diplomats” appointed during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

According to international media, these ambassadors have been instructed to return to Washington by January. Although the U.S. administration calls this a normal post-transition process, diplomatic circles see it as an unusual decision with potentially wide-ranging consequences.

Along with Nepal, ambassadors serving in countries such as Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, Armenia, Guatemala, and other nations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America have been asked to return home.

Under U.S. law, ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president, but traditionally career diplomats are retained even after a change in administration. This tradition has been broken by the Trump administration’s recall, sparking new debate.

Some say the administration may now send diplomats who can better implement its changed policies to those countries.

The recalled ambassadors will be reinstated at the U.S. Department of State or may be given new responsibilities.
