 The Election Commission has decided to put on hold (Tameli) any investigation or action against Swatantra Party Chief Rabi Lamichhane into the status of his citizenship.

Raj Kumar Pandey of Chitwan had filed a petition at the Election Commission’s Chitwan office demanding that Lamichhane’s citizenship be investigated, and his candidature disqualified , ‘as he was holding an American citizenship’.

Lamichhane who heads the Swatantra Party is a frontrunner in the Chitwan-2 Parliamentary Constituency. The EC that said the case will be in the ‘tameli’ has not, however, clarified whether there will be any investigation into the complaint filed just a week before the poll date.

The EC had disqualified Dr Toshima Karki, a Swatantra Party candidate from Lalitpur-3 , for the Federal Parliament on the ground of being elected member at the Medical Council she was holding an ‘office of profit’. However, the EC decision was annulled by the Supreme court .
