U.S. President Donald Trump has said that talks between the United States and Iran aimed at completely ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East were “productive,” and announced a five-day pause in military action. However, Iran has rejected his claims.

On Monday, Trump wrote on social media that he had postponed his threat to attack Iran’s power plants for five days. Following these reports, global oil and gas prices dropped immediately.

But shortly after Trump’s statement became public, Iran’s parliament speaker denied that any such talks had taken place. He described the claim as “fake news,” accusing it of being propaganda intended to influence and manipulate the oil market.

After his initial social media post, Trump said Iran had “one last chance” for peace. Analysts have commented that this reflects how rapidly the conflict is escalating and how uncertain the situation has become.

Meanwhile, attacks continue in Iran’s capital Tehran and in Beirut, Lebanon. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, at least 1,039 people have been killed in the conflict that began last month.
