With the aim of global cooperation and commitment to protecting human rights, the world is observing the 77th International Human Rights Day today. Nepal is also marking the day with various programs.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, messages of goodwill have been received from the President Ramchandra Paudel, Vice-President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki, and various political parties.

The day is observed in remembrance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

That Declaration guarantees equal and inalienable rights to all — regardless of caste, religion, gender, language, thought, social origin or birth — ensuring non-discrimination and equality for everyone.

In Nepal, this Day has contributed to raising public awareness, strengthening rights protection, and energizing efforts toward building a just society.

Recently, on Tuesday, the international day for human-rights defenders was also observed. The 1948 UDHR, the 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, and the 1966 International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights (to which Nepal is a party) guarantee every individual the right to defend their own and others’ rights.

Nepal’s constitution ensures freedoms such as freedom of thought and expression, peaceful assembly, and the right to form associations.

The Government of Nepal has also issued instructions (in 2077 B.S.) to ensure the safety and protection of human-rights activists. In this context, the Day is being commemorated today.
