Scotland’s dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in history has been thrown into doubt after a heavy defeat to Brazil. A 3-0 loss in their final Group C match has left Steve Clarke’s side relying on results elsewhere to keep their hopes alive.

Before the match, Scotland needed at least a draw against Brazil to put themselves in a strong position to qualify. However, a poor and error-prone defensive display proved costly, leaving them at risk of elimination. They must now wait until Sunday to find out whether they finish among the eight best third-placed teams and advance to the knockout stage.

Making his first start of the tournament, Scott McKenna took too long on the ball, allowing Brazil teenager Rayan to win possession. His superb pass found Vinícius Júnior, who made no mistake in giving Brazil an early lead.

Vinícius thought he had doubled the advantage shortly afterward after dispossessing Jack Hendry and beating goalkeeper Angus Gunn. However, following a VAR review, the goal was ruled out because Hendry had been fouled in the build-up.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti was visibly unhappy with the decision, but his side continued to dominate. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Scotland failed to clear their lines, allowing Vinícius to head home his second goal. Brazil created enough chances to score five, with Vinícius also coming close to completing a hat-trick, but they were unable to convert all of their opportunities. Matheus Cunha eventually added a third goal to seal a convincing 3-0 victory.

Scotland must now hope their opening victory over Haiti will be enough to earn them one of the eight best third-place spots. Their dream of reaching the last 32 remains alive, but qualification is no longer in their own hands.

Morocco beat Haiti 4-2 in thrilling contest

In the other Group C match, Morocco defeated Haiti 4-2 to finish level on seven points with Brazil. However, Brazil topped the group on goal difference, leaving Morocco to qualify for the knockout stage as runners-up. After a 2-2 first half, Morocco scored twice after the break to secure victory.

Playing in Atlanta, 83rd-ranked Haiti stunned Morocco by taking the lead twice. In the 10th minute, Lenny Joseph’s effort deflected off Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and into the net, ultimately being recorded as an own goal, denying Joseph the chance to become only Haiti’s second World Cup goalscorer.

Morocco equalised in the 39th minute when Achraf Hakimi capitalised on a weak save from Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide. Haiti regained the lead just before halftime as Wilson Isidor fired a spectacular strike from around 25 yards into the top corner.

Placide produced a series of outstanding saves throughout the second half to keep Haiti in the match. However, substitute Soufiane Rahimi put Morocco ahead for the first time in the 78th minute, before Gessime Yassine added another goal a minute from time to seal a 4-2 win.

Although Haiti were eliminated, they ended a 52-year wait to score at a World Cup and doubled their all-time tournament goal tally with a spirited performance. Morocco, meanwhile, advanced to the Round of 32, where they will face one of the Netherlands, Japan, or Sweden.
