Kathmandu — Sapana Pradhan Malla has assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice from today.

She took over the responsibility following the retirement of Prakash Man Singh Raut, who stepped down upon reaching the constitutional age limit of 65.

According to the Constitution, when the post of Chief Justice falls vacant, the senior-most justice of the Supreme Court automatically assumes the role of Acting Chief Justice.

However, the appointment of a new Chief Justice is likely to take some time, as the Constitutional Council is yet to be fully formed.

The permanent Chief Justice will be appointed only after the parliamentary process, including a parliamentary hearing, is completed and the President formally makes the appointment.
