Kathmandu – Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist Leninist , KP Sharma Oli, has said that the results of the recently concluded election did not come as he had expected.

In a message posted on Facebook, Oli stated that in a democracy the final verdict belongs to the people and that it is his and his party’s duty to respect that verdict. “In this election, I could not achieve the result I had expected. Our party also could not secure the anticipated outcome. In a democracy, the final decision belongs to the people, and it is the duty of my party and myself to accept that decision with respect. I fully accept the people’s mandate with utmost respect,” Oli said.

Oli also expressed gratitude to voters, leaders, cadres, volunteers, well-wishers and supporters who voted for the sun symbol despite difficult circumstances. “Your trust is our strength, and your support is our power,” he wrote in the message.

He added that even though the election result did not go in his favour, his commitment and dedication to the people remain unchanged. According to him, his party will continue to remain among the people, work for them and further strengthen the bond of trust.

“The election result did not come in our favour. But our commitment and dedication to the people have not weakened in the slightest. We will remain among the people, continue working for them and move forward by strengthening this relationship of trust,” he said.

Former prime minister Oli, who had contested the House of Representatives election from Jhapa-5, was defeated by Balendra (Balen) Shah, former mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, by a wide margin. Shah won the seat with nearly 50,000 more votes than Oli.
