In a significant political development, former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has announced the withdrawal of his candidacy from Gorkha Constituency No. 2 for the upcoming March 5 general elections.

After consulting with close political aides, Bhattarai, who had filed his nomination under the Progressive Democratic Party, shared his decision via a social media video, explaining that he intends to take on a broader “guardian” role rather than contesting as a candidate of a single party.

This move comes amid a crowded field in Gorkha-2, including candidates from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).

While Bhattarai has not endorsed a specific successor, he indicated he would support “progressive forces” and “forward-looking” candidates from parties like the RSP and the Ujyaalo Nepal Party.
