KATHMANDU – The candidacy of Resham Chaudhary, who filed his nomination from Kailali-1 on behalf of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, has been revoked.

The Office of the Returning Officer determined that Chaudhary, who registered his nomination on Tuesday for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 6 (Falgun 21), is “ineligible” to be a candidate under the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2017.

The Commission cancelled his candidacy after finding him ineligible under Section 13 of the Election Act.

Chaudhary had been found guilty by three tiers of courts and sentenced to life imprisonment for the August 2015 Tikapur incident, where eight police officers and a minor were killed.

The life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Kailali District Court was upheld not only by the Dipayal High Court but also by the Supreme Court. On May 16, 2023 (Jestha 2, 2080), a joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Anandamohan Bhattarai and Nahakul Subedi upheld the decision to sentence Chaudhary to life imprisonment.

In the 2022 (2079 BS) elections, Chaudhary had filed his candidacy from Bardiya-2, but the Commission revoked it then as well. Following the cancellation of his candidacy, Lalbir Chaudhary, an independent candidate supported by him, was elected from that constituency.
