Kathmandu — Gagan Thapa is all but certain to be elected president of the Nepali Congress at the ongoing special general convention. Only his candidacy was filed for the post, making an uncontested victory likely. The election committee is preparing to formally announce his election as president after completing the necessary procedures.

Alongside the presidency, decisions on other key party posts have largely been settled. According to sources, Bishwaprakash Sharma and Pushpa Bhusal are almost certain to be selected as vice presidents, and an agreement has reportedly been reached on Pradeep Poudel and Gururaj Ghimire for the two general secretary positions, making their selection almost certain as well.

Even though consensus has been reached on the top leadership, there is significant competition for deputy general secretary and other member positions. With more candidates than available posts, efforts are underway to select leadership by broad agreement. Party leader Gururaj Ghimire said that efforts are being made to move forward with maximum internal consensus.
