Government holds Intensive Talks with Party Leaders, Strong Push for On-Time Election Signals

Kathmandu – In a concerted push to ensure that Nepal’s next House of Representatives election takes place on schedule, the interim government has intensified political consultations with key party leaders soliciting their support.

At the forefront of this engagement on Government’s behalf is Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, who is conducting back-to-back meetings with the heads of the country’s three major political parties–Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist and the Nepali Communist Party.

On Friday, Kharel began his outreach by meeting Nepali Congress Chairman  Sher Bahadur Deuba at his residence in Maharajgunj. According to statements from Kharel’s office, the two discussed the upcoming March 5, 2026 general election — emphasizing the Nepali Congress’s expressed priority for elections and need for a conducive environment. Deuba reportedly reaffirmed his party’s commitment to participating in the polls while urging the government to create favourable conditions for all stakeholders.

Kharel  also met  CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli. Focusing discussion  on  security arrangements and the broader electoral climate. Kharel  is believed to have assured  that the government is strengthening security measures so that voters and candidates alike can engage in the democratic process without fear. Oli, so far an advocate of no-cooperation with the government,  is reported to have welcomed the effort to create an conducive atmosphere for the poll.

Later in the day, Kharel also  met Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at his Khumaltar residence, where the later reiterated his party’s support for holding the election as scheduled.
