Kathmandu — Prime Minister Sushila Karki Decides Not to Wear or Apply Tika-Jamara This Year’s Dashain

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has decided not to wear Tika and Jamara during this year’s Dashain festival.

The decision was announced through a letter issued by the Prime Minister’s personal secretariat, which clarified that she will not apply Tika-Jamara herself and there will be no program for citizens to do so either.

The letter states that the recent youth movement, in which many young lives were lost, remains fresh in everyone’s memory. This is the reason behind the Prime Minister’s decision not to wear Tika-Jamara this year.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s office, it was said, “On this year’s Dashain, we wish happiness, peace, prosperity, and continuous progress for all Nepali brothers and sisters across the country. We also hope this festival serves as an opportunity to strengthen family unity and social harmony. We inform you that the Prime Minister has decided not to wear Tika-Jamara this year. The government also reiterates its commitment to conduct the parliamentary elections on the scheduled date and maintain good governance in the country.”

Earlier, former King Gyanendra Shah also announced that he will not apply Tika to the general public during this year’s Dashain.

“We are compelled to celebrate this festival only as a family and cultural tradition. We inform our well-wishing citizens that, unlike in the past, we will not be providing Tika-Jamara on a larger scale this year,” the former king said in a message on Sunday.
