Uber, the global ride-sharing app, announced the official launch of its services in Nepal starting Friday.

The company made the announcement during a formal event in Kathmandu. High-ranking government officials, including secretaries from the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, attended the event.

“Among the rapidly developing urban markets in South Asia, Nepal now has access to Uber’s reliable transportation platform. With this launch, Nepal becomes the first new market Uber has entered in South Asia in a decade, reinforcing the strategic importance of this region in Uber’s global expansion journey,” stated Uber in a press release.

In Nepal, Uber has launched Uber Go and Uber Comfort for four-wheelers, and Uber Bike for two-wheelers. These services aim to provide passengers with simple, reliable, and convenient options for commuting within the city, according to Uber.

Nepal now becomes part of Uber’s global network, which spans over 70 countries.

Dominic Taylor, Regional General Manager for Uber’s Rides division in the Asia-Pacific region, said, “We are excited to launch Uber in Nepal and welcome Nepal to Uber’s global mobility market network. The increasing digital access, urban transportation needs, and thriving tourism economy make Nepal a dynamic and rapidly developing market.”

Welcoming Uber’s launch in Nepal, Mukunda Prasad Niraula, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, said, “Tourism is one of the main pillars of Nepal’s economy, and ease of transportation and access will play a crucial role in the future development of this sector. Uber’s arrival in Nepal, as a reliable platform used by millions of travelers in over 80 countries worldwide, will further strengthen Nepal’s position on the international tourism map. We believe this service will make travel more convenient and comfortable for both foreign tourists and Nepali citizens.”

Similarly, Gopal Prasad Sigdel, Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development, stated, “The government is pleased to welcome Uber to Nepal. This is a significant milestone in our journey towards building a modern, digital, and inclusive transportation system.
