Switzerland has secured a spot in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup as group winners by defeating co-host Canada. Despite a 2-1 loss to Switzerland in the final group stage match of Group B, Canada has also confirmed its place in the last 32.

In the match held in Vancouver, Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored within the first 12 minutes of the second half, leading Switzerland to a 2-1 victory. With this win, Switzerland becomes the third nation to reach the knockout stage in four consecutive World Cups, following Argentina and France.

As group winners, Switzerland will now face the third-placed team from one of Groups E, F, G, H, I, or J on July 3 at the same venue. Despite the defeat, Canada has made history by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time as runners-up. This marks the greatest achievement in Canada’s World Cup history.

However, failing to become group winners means coach Jesse Marsch’s team loses the advantage of playing on home soil. Canada’s next match is scheduled for June 28 against the runner-up of Group A at the Los Angeles Stadium in California.

In the first half, both teams struggled to create significant opportunities. Captain Granit Xhaka, playing his 149th international match, managed to create a few limited chances, but Switzerland was held to a goalless draw in the first half. Canada, which scored six goals against Qatar last week, could not deliver the expected performance in this match, managing only three shots on target in the first half.

The game took an exciting turn just a minute into the second half. Ruben Vargas converted a cross from Manzambi into a goal, marking his second goal of the tournament and giving Switzerland the lead. Eleven minutes later, Manzambi capitalized on Embolo’s excellent hold-up play to score from inside the penalty area, doubling Switzerland’s lead.

With 14 minutes remaining, substitute Promise David scored to attempt a comeback for Canada, but it was not enough. He scored just 76 seconds after entering the field. No further goals were scored, resulting in Canada’s defeat. Despite the loss, Canada successfully secured a spot in the knockout stage as runners-up.
