Shah Rukh Khan: Last of Stars

In the world of cinema, names of actors often shine the brightest. Their lives inevitably get weighed against the characters we see on screen. The hero who battles alone on screen, emerging victorious—one might imagine that his off‑screen life is just as heroic. But the reality is far more rugged. Stepping off the set, carrying the weight of that “hero” label shifts lives in subtle, unyielding ways. There is scarcely room to walk freely, to spend quiet moments with family, without a wave of onlookers at your heels. Still, “Yes, this is why I became an actor, this is why I became a hero,” says Shah Rukh Khan.

On 2 November, Shah Rukh turned 60. Across six decades of life, he has spent nearly three of them in movies—building himself into a star: the star. He once told the show hosted by Anupam Kher: “I am the last of the stars.”  Critics may have called it arrogant, but it was more than bravado—it was a declaration that the era of the star, as we knew it, was drawing to a close.

There were legends like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan whose faces alone could fill theatres. But today’s industry feels subtly different; the cult of one‑face‑one‑empire seems muted. Though contemporaries like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan still command massive audiences, the idea that cinema would revolve around a single star—one name to rule all—feels like a chapter that is ending.

Yes, Shah Rukh’s generation still stands. Yes, his next release King looms large. And yes, even as new faces carve space, the very meaning of “star” is shifting. It might not just be about one man, one face, one empire. Yet in the story of this era, Shah Rukh has built something to cherish and refer to an era of star.

One thing is clear: stories, direction and acting have always mattered. But there was a time when studios didn’t pause before putting money behind a face like his. Those days might be winding down—but the legacy that remains is bold and indelible. Even Shah Rukh knows it: the formula that once guaranteed success isn’t guaranteed any longer. He stepped away when it mattered, returned stronger with Pathaan and Jawan, and reminded us that the title “star” isn’t simply earned—it is fought for, every day.

On his birthday, as the buzz around his new film grows, we wait to see what the cinema ‘King’ will bring next. And to Shah Rukh Khan himself: many happy returns.
