In a competitive FIFA World Cup Group B match, Qatar and Switzerland played to a 1-1 draw. The match, held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, saw Switzerland take an early lead, but Qatar made a comeback in the final moments. Defender Boualem Khoukhi scored a remarkable header in the fifth minute of injury time to save Qatar from defeat.

Throughout the match, Switzerland maintained clear dominance in ball possession and put pressure on Qatar, securing an early lead in the first half. In the 13th minute, Swiss forward Breel Embolo was fouled by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, resulting in a penalty for Switzerland. Abunada received a yellow card and, after a brief period of inactivity due to the collision, returned to the game following treatment.

Breel Embolo, who faced legal and visa complications before being allowed entry into America, calmly converted the penalty in the 17th minute, shooting the ball into the top left corner of the goalpost to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead. His visa process was delayed due to a final verdict in a 2018 criminal case, and he only received the necessary visa from the embassy on June 3.

Due to unusually hot weather, sprinklers were used on the field during the first half break. Switzerland missed several opportunities to extend their lead. In the second minute of the game, Qatar’s Edmilson Junior had a golden chance to score, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made an excellent save. Similarly, in the 90th minute, Kobel stopped a shot from Qatar’s Ahmed Alaaeldin, but ultimately, he could not prevent Qatar’s equalizer in injury time.

Under coach Murat Yakin, Switzerland remained unbeaten in the qualifying rounds, reaching the World Cup for the sixth consecutive time. The Swiss team, which has not missed a World Cup since 2002, was defeated 6-1 by Portugal in the last 16 four years ago. On the other hand, under Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, Qatar secured their World Cup spot by defeating the UAE and Oman in playoffs last November. After losing all their group stage matches as the host nation in the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has made a strong start this time.
