Portugal has been eliminated from the ongoing World Cup at the round of 16. This tournament was significant for the renowned star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who had announced it would be his last World Cup. However, Portugal’s journey ended in the round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

The match remained goalless for most of the time, but Spain secured a 1-0 victory with a decisive goal in the first minute of the six-minute added injury time. Substitute player Mikel Merino ensured the team’s win by capitalizing on a pass from Ferran Torres.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo concluded his journey as the only player to have scored in all six World Cups since 2006. He also broke the record of not scoring in the knockout stages in this World Cup. Despite winning various titles, Ronaldo could not fulfill his dream of lifting the World Cup trophy.

In the second half, while Spain struggled to create clear goal-scoring opportunities, Arsenal midfielder Merino scored in the 91st minute from an excellent pass by Ferran Torres, leaving goalkeeper Diogo Costa with no chance.

This result mirrored the history of the 2010 World Cup, where Spain also defeated Portugal 1-0 at the same stage. Spain will now face the winner between co-hosts the United States or Belgium in the quarterfinals on July 10 in Los Angeles.

Spain missed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the third minute of the game. Mikel Oyarzabal advanced past Portugal’s defense on a pass from Dani Olmo, but his shot went wide of the goalpost.

Subsequently, Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa made two excellent saves, blocking attempts from Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena. Despite Spain’s continuous pressure, Portugal created the most dangerous opportunity thereafter.

In the 41st minute, a powerful left-footed shot by Nuno Mendes deflected off Pedro Porro and hit the crossbar. With luck on their side, Spain averted the crisis, and the first half ended in a goalless draw.

In the second half, Roberto Martinez’s team displayed increased confidence in the game. However, forwards including Ronaldo were unable to succeed in the frontline.
