Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has stated that autocracy has begun within the Congress party, which was established to promote democracy and end autocracy.

Speaking with Desh Sanchar, Koirala mentioned that democracy is currently at its weakest point in history.

He emphasized that the need for the policy of national unity and reconciliation, initiated by BP Koirala in 2033 BS, has increased significantly today.

Koirala asserted that the Nepali Congress has no alternative but to move forward with the policy of national unity and reconciliation as advocated by BP Koirala.

Koirala remarked, “To strengthen Nepal’s nationality, sovereignty, integrity, and democracy, cooperation and unity among all forces in Nepal are essential.”

In 2033 BS, after returning to Nepal from an eight-year exile in India, BP Koirala had stated that the monarchy was central to Nepal’s nationalism and that the monarchy and democratic system should advance together.

Earlier, during a Koshi Province-level gathering held in Biratnagar on Sunday, Koirala publicly disclosed the five-point proposal he had discussed with Gagan Thapa.

In the meeting, he questioned, “What is preventing agreement now?” Koirala disclosed that after Gagan Thapa visited his residence last month and threatened party members with disciplinary action, he was compelled to make his five-point stance public. He stressed that without consensus, the Congress party cannot move forward, saying, “We must proceed with the agreement, cooperation, and unity as advocated by Girija Prasad Koirala, and this must start within our own party.” Koirala also expressed his commitment to ensuring that the party does not split under any circumstances.
