Nepal Telecom has intensified its efforts to expand communication services to the country’s most remote and inaccessible areas using VSAT and satellite technology. The company reports that it is currently providing satellite-based GSM mobile services in 38 remote locations across the country. This fiscal year alone, services have been extended to four new locations: Kugau and Nijal in Dolpa, Na-Gaun in Dolakha, and Chandanbari in Rasuwa.

According to Telecom, Dolpa district, known for its challenging geography, hosts the highest number of such sites, with 14 currently in operation. Additionally, satellite technology is being used to offer 2G GSM mobile, telephone, and data services in various remote settlements in Humla, Mugu, Manang, Dolakha, Taplejung, Solukhumbu, Rasuwa, Darchula, Bajura, and Jumla. The company has even employed helicopters to transport equipment to these areas.

The company states that the service is being provided in sparsely populated areas not for commercial gain, but to fulfill the motto “Nepal Telecom: The Nation’s Communication.” Efforts are underway to upgrade these sites under the Backbone Transmission Project and ensure secure and reliable data services through the expansion of the optical fiber network. A press release by spokesperson Sobhanman Manandhar mentions that old equipment is being replaced with modern routers and alternative links are being arranged to enhance service efficiency.
