In Kathmandu, a positive discussion took place between Prime Minister and representatives of the Nepal Footwear Manufacturers Association, coordinated by Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Vidushi Rana, to address issues in the industrial sector.

The meeting at Baluwatar reached significant agreements on protecting domestic industries, controlling illegal imports, creating jobs, skill development, and promoting exports.

This discussion was organized to develop the footwear and garment industry, which ranks as the second-largest employment generator in Nepal after agriculture and livestock.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed the government’s strong commitment to controlling illegal imports. Acknowledging the need to strictly regulate goods sold without bills, he pledged to form a special task force in coordination with customs, commerce, Nepal Police, Armed Police, and related agencies.

The task force is expected to play an effective role in curbing illegal imports at markets and borders.

The discussion also agreed on the government conducting ‘skill-based training’ programs to prepare skilled manpower necessary for industries. Additionally, a ‘rapid response mechanism’ will be implemented to promptly address disruptions in the supply chain of industries.

While direct cash grants may not be immediately possible, the government is inclined to support export-oriented industries through tax and electricity tariff concessions.

The Prime Minister showed particular interest in increasing domestic production, substituting imports, creating jobs, and providing opportunities within the country to youths migrating abroad.

The government’s commitment to promptly addressing the private sector’s issues has added new enthusiasm among industrialists and entrepreneurs. Currently, around 1,200 small, medium, and large footwear industries are operating in Nepal.

The meeting, coordinated by MP Rana, included participation from Suraj Banjade, President of the Nepal Footwear Manufacturers Association, former President Rudra Nyaupane, General Secretary Nirmal Bhattarai, Advisor Kalidas Gautam, and Executive Committee Member Saroj Bhattarai.
