The government has halted the registration of new public vehicles across the country.

The Department of Transport Management has issued a directive to all provincial governments and local bodies, instructing them not to register new public vehicles.

According to the department, the inability to scientifically manage public transportation has led to increased air pollution, traffic congestion, and roadblocks. Additionally, the rise in fuel prices has created further difficulties in the public transport sector, necessitating this decision.

The department noted that under Clause 24, Sub-clause (3) of the “Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049”, there is a legal provision to suspend vehicle registration if deemed necessary due to environmental pollution, traffic congestion, road conditions, or public interest.

The letter issued by the department also states that the registration of new electric public vehicles is to be suspended for the time being.
