In Birtamod, Jhapa, the historic ‘Muktichok’ monument has begun to be dismantled. This action is part of advancing the construction of the Asian Highway, which requires road expansion. The removal of the monument started on Thursday night.

The monument has been a significant symbol of Birtamod, representing its historical importance. It was established as a symbol of ‘liberation’ following the successful second people’s movement of 2062–063, which led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a democratic republic.

The late Girija Prasad Koirala, then Prime Minister and President of the Nepali Congress, inaugurated this martyr’s pillar. For a long time, this intersection has been known as a busy and central hub in Jhapa.

According to Sunil Babu Pant, the project chief of the eastern section of the Laukahi-Kakarbhitta Asian Highway, the monument had to be relocated due to technical requirements, as it obstructed road construction.

The monument, after being removed from the intersection, will be temporarily kept safe at the Birtamod Municipality office, as stated by the project.

The removal of this structure, which carries the legacy of Birtamod’s pride and the movement, has elicited mixed reactions from local residents.
