Mexico City – Co-host Mexico made a victorious start in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In an exciting match held at Mexico’s historic and iconic Estadio Azteca, the home team secured a comfortable 2-0 win over South Africa.

The Azteca Stadium set a record by hosting matches in three different World Cups, drawing a significant crowd of spectators.

Amidst strong support from the home crowd, Julian Quinones and experienced forward Raul Jimenez each scored a goal to lead Mexico to victory.

In a highly competitive and somewhat tense match, the Brazilian referee issued a total of three red cards.

Mexico, which played aggressively from the start, took the lead in the ninth minute. Taking full advantage of a ball mishandled by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and his defender, Mexico capitalized on the opportunity.

Julian Quinones converted a well-placed pass from Erik Lira into a goal, giving the team a 1-0 lead. In the 42nd minute, another shot by Julian hit the goalpost and bounced back.
