The House of Representatives in the U S has voted to unseat Kevin McCarthy as Speaker.

The motion to vacate the chair was brought by a member of his own party and this is the first time a speaker has been removed through a motion to vacate, according to the Epoch Times.

The tally of historic votes on Tuesday to oust the speaker was 216 to 210. Matt Gaetz who rallied just seven Republicans to join him as he relied on Democrats to oust Mr. McCarthy, it added.

Mr. McCarthy had presented a supplemental appropriations bill to fund the war effort in Ukraine, which was passed on Sept. 28 despite being opposed by a majority of Republicans was among the tipping points, it said.
