Kathmandu – Today, International Day of Families is being celebrated in various countries worldwide with diverse programs focusing on sustainable development, social inclusion, and the empowered role of families.

On this occasion, a special discussion on policy solutions for sustainable development is taking place at the United Nations headquarters as part of preparations for the upcoming second World Summit for Social Development.

Since the 1980s, the United Nations has paid special attention to family-related issues. In 1983, the Commission for Social Development passed a proposal on “The Role of the Family in the Development Process” based on the recommendation of the Economic and Social Council. It urged the Secretary-General to raise global awareness about family problems, needs, and solutions.

According to the United Nations, in 1985, the Council suggested that the General Assembly include “The Family in the Development Process” in its agenda. Following this, efforts were made to improve the status and welfare of families and to enhance international cooperation for social development based on the views and proposals of member states.

In 1989, the General Assembly declared an “International Year of the Family.” Subsequently, a proposal passed in 1993 decided to observe May 15 each year as the International Day of Families. This day has been officially celebrated worldwide since 1994.

The International Day of Families is believed to provide an opportunity to raise awareness about social, economic, and demographic processes related to families. The family and family-friendly policies and programs are considered crucial foundations for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals approved by 193 member states of the United Nations in 2015.

The role of families is given special importance in achieving goals such as poverty reduction, ending discrimination, social security, and inclusive development.
