With Thursday’s House of Representatives election looming, Kathmandu’s streets have begun to look eerily quiet as large numbers of voters leave the valley for their home districts to cast ballots.

As ordinary residents travel to their native towns to participate in the election, traffic in the capital has noticeably thinned.

Even major thoroughfares that are typically bustling with vehicles now show only sparse movement, while commercial districts appear more subdued than usual.

Scenes of a quieter-than-usual Kathmandu have circulated publicly in the days leading up to the vote.
