Khotang – Halesi Tuwachung Municipality has decided to assist residents displaced from Kathmandu and other cities in building homes. This decision follows the federal government’s campaign to remove structures from encroached settlements in the Kathmandu Valley and other districts, offering support to those wishing to return to their villages.

In a meeting held on Wednesday, the municipal executive decided to aid citizens from the municipal area who wish to return to their own land and build homes, informed Mayor Bimala Rai. “The government has launched a campaign to free public and government land from encroachment across the country,” she said. “We have called on displaced residents to return to their own places for a dignified life. The municipality will assist families who have land but lack housing.”

The municipal executive has formed a committee led by Deputy Mayor Ramesh Kumar Raut to collect data on displaced residents. The committee will issue a notice inviting applications and identify families wishing to return, providing financial and technical support for housing construction, Mayor Rai stated.

According to municipal spokesperson and Ward No. 7 Chair Kamal Giri, each family will receive Rs 500,000 for housing construction.

Meanwhile, the District Administration Office has instructed the ten local levels in the district to submit details of encroached government and public land within three days. Administrative Officer Prabhat Dhakal mentioned that they have been asked to present a plan for identifying and removing encroachments.

Chief District Officer Rekha Kandel stated that the request for details is based on the Home Ministry’s directive from Baisakh 16. “The government has initiated efforts to bring encroached land under state ownership. After data collection, we will complete the necessary procedures to remove encroached structures,” she said.
