Kathmandu — The Election Commission of Nepal has officially recognized Gagan Thapa as the president of the Nepali Congress, giving legal approval to the party’s special general convention.

A meeting of the acting chief election commissioner and other commissioners decided to grant legal status to the Thapa-led group.

The commission updated the party records under Section 51 of the Political Parties Act and formally approved Thapa’s faction.

On Thursday, the Thapa group submitted details of its newly elected central committee to the commission for record updates.

Meanwhile, the other faction had filed a complaint at the commission, claiming that no special general convention was held and that the election and the newly elected committee led by Thapa were illegal.
