Kathmandu — The Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court seeking to block the candidate nomination process scheduled for Magh 6.

The petition was filed in response to the Election Commission’s decision on Magh 2 to grant legal recognition to the central committee elected through a special general convention under the leadership of Gagan Thapa. The Deuba group argues that the commission’s decision was unlawful and wants it overturned.

In the writ, the Deuba faction has asked the Supreme Court to postpone the nomination date of Magh 6 to a later date and to annul the Election Commission’s decision to recognise the new committee. Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka are among the petitioners, and the Election Commission, Gagan Thapa, Vice-President Bishwaprakash Sharma, and the entire committee have been named as respondents.

The Supreme Court has scheduled the initial hearing of the petition for Magh 6. Because Monday was a public holiday, the hearing will take place on Tuesday. Although Khadka had requested that the hearing be held immediately, the court declined, saying it would follow procedural rules.

Meanwhile, the Deuba faction has also submitted a request to the Election Commission to postpone the Magh 6 nomination date. Leaders including Krishna Prasad Poudel and Khamba Bahadur Khati have already filed this application with the commission.
