Canada, one of the co-hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, became the first host nation to exit the tournament. Their historic journey ended after a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in a match held in Houston, Texas. Morocco, on the other hand, became the first African team to reach the quarterfinals for the second consecutive time.

Canada started the match aggressively. Within the first 11 minutes, Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi had excellent chances to score, but Morocco’s goalkeeper Bono made impressive saves to keep his team out of trouble.

While Morocco appeared under pressure in the first half, they changed the game’s dynamics in the second half. In the 50th minute, Azzedine Ounahi capitalized on a free-kick pass from Achraf Hakimi to give Morocco the lead.

Morocco maintained control of the game thereafter. In the 82nd minute, Ounahi scored his second goal on a counterattack, doubling the team’s lead. In the final moments of injury time, Soufiane Rahimi beat goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to add a third goal, securing a comfortable victory for Morocco.

The match was marked by intense competition between the two teams. English referee Michael Oliver issued a total of eight yellow cards during the game. Despite the defeat, Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players’ performance.

He stated, “From the start, only one team dominated the field. We played better than the team ranked seventh in the world.” However, failing to capitalize on opportunities led to Canada’s exit from the tournament.

Even though they were eliminated, this World Cup was historic for Canada. In this edition, Canada achieved its first point, first win, advanced past the group stage for the first time, and won in the knockout stage for the first time in their men’s World Cup history.

Meanwhile, Morocco is one step closer to repeating their historic semifinal journey from the 2022 World Cup. They will now compete in the quarterfinals against the winner of the match between France and Paraguay for a place in the semifinals.
