Bosnia and Herzegovina strengthened their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time by defeating Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B match.

Despite having the same four points as Canada, Bosnia had to settle for third place due to a head-to-head disadvantage. This meant they couldn’t secure a direct spot in the final 32, but they maintained a strong chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams among eight groups. Qatar, on the other hand, was eliminated from the tournament.

In Seattle, with temperatures reaching 29 degrees Celsius, Bosnia started aggressively. Within the first three minutes, Qatar’s goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada made excellent saves against long-range shots from Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic.

Bosnia took the lead in the 29th minute when 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic evaded two defenders and converted a powerful shot into a goal, putting Bosnia ahead 1-0.

Bosnian fans in the stadium were further thrilled when 40-year-old captain Edin Dzeko played a crucial role in the team’s second goal during his 150th international match. In the 34th minute, Dzeko’s volley deflected off defender Mahmoud Abunada and resulted in an unfortunate own goal for Qatar.

Bosnia’s top scorer and record appearance holder, Dzeko, had another chance to extend the lead to 3-0 four minutes later, but his powerful shot hit the goalpost.

Qatar also created some opportunities. Three minutes before the end of the first half, captain Hassan Al-Haydos converted Edmilson Junior’s cross into a goal, reducing the deficit and giving his team hope.

Towards the end of the first half, Qatar increased the pressure. Pedro Miguel’s shot from an Akram Afif pass hit the goalpost, bringing Qatar close to equalizing.

Early in the second half, another attempt by Afif hit the side netting. Although Qatar created some threats on the counterattack, they couldn’t succeed. Even after introducing reliable scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes, Qatar couldn’t make the desired impact.

Bosnia, however, delivered an excellent defensive performance and secured three points with a third goal in the 80th minute. Substitute Ermin Mahmic scored, securing the team’s three points with his second consecutive game goal.

This victory marks only the second in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup history. Previously, they defeated Iran 3-1 in their first World Cup appearance in 2014.

Although Bosnia’s chances of reaching the next round appear strong with four points, the official outcome will depend on the results of other group matches. Meanwhile, Qatar finished at the bottom of the group with one point and exited the tournament.
