Birendranagar street vendor compensated Rs 10,000 after kafal spill incident

In Birendranagar, Surkhet, a street vendor woman who suffered losses when her kafal berries were spilled during a scuffle with municipal police has received compensation of Rs 10,000.

The Birendranagar Municipality located and provided this relief amount to Dharmila Adhikari Chaulagain from Mahabai Rural Municipality-4 in Kalikot.

For the past 4–5 years, Dharmila has been supporting her family by selling fruits on the street. She was selling kafal in a basket near the city bus park in Birendranagar when municipal police attempted to remove her, leading to a confrontation.

During this incident, when the police shook her basket, about 15 kg of kafal, which was being sold at Rs 500 per kg, spilled onto the street, resulting in a loss of approximately Rs 7,500.

The incident of the spilled kafal went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism. In response, the municipality took serious note of the event, contacted the affected woman, and provided compensation.

Additionally, the municipality has stated that it has initiated the process for necessary action against the municipal police involved in the mistreatment of the woman.
