Belgium, a strong European team, narrowly avoided defeat against African side Egypt in the World Cup. Due to an own goal in the second half, Egypt missed the chance to secure their first-ever World Cup victory. Belgium managed to salvage a point with a 1-1 draw in their Group G opener in Seattle.

Egypt took the lead in the 21st minute when Imam Ashour’s powerful shot from about 20 yards out surprised Belgium’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and found the back of the net. However, in the 66th minute, as Thomas Meunier’s cross aimed for Lukaku, Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany accidentally scored an own goal near the post. Supported by a large number of fans on America’s west coast, Egypt was in search of their first World Cup win.

Having first participated in the World Cup in 1934, Egypt had not won in their previous seven matches. Despite being seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, they had to fight to maintain the draw in the final moments. Although they avoided defeat, this was only their third World Cup match where they did not lose.

Despite being the most successful team in the Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt’s World Cup history has been disappointing. In their three World Cup appearances, they have played eight matches but have yet to register a win.

During the match, a free kick from Kevin De Bruyne hit the post. Although Belgium increased their control in the second half, they could not secure a clear three points.
