Bar begins protest against delay in appointing CJ

Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has decided to intensify activities to put pressure on the government for early appointment of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

NBA, apex body of the bar, is holding protest programmes from today seeking CJ appointment immediately. ‘A prolonged absence of CJ at the Supreme Court has several consequences in the judicial accomplishment’, NBA said.

The week long protest has began today afternoon at the NBA premises.

On 13th April, a Delegation of NBA led by its chairman Gopal Krishna Ghimire had met Prime Minister Pushpa Kanal Dahal and gave him a ten-day deadline to initiate the process for CJ appointment.

The post of CJ has been lying vacant for the past 14 months after political parties registered an impeachment motion against CJ Cholendra Shumsher Rana leading to his suspension till his retirement on age grounds in September.

The meeting of top leaders in the three major parties held at the residence of former prime minister and CPN-UML chief K P Oli dated April 17 had decided to begin the process of appointment.
