Arsenal has reached the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years. Bukayo Saka’s sole goal in the second leg of the semifinal proved decisive. This goal was enough to defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate.

Mikel Arteta’s team had been defeated by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals last season. However, this time, Arsenal overcame Spanish club Atletico, considered a relatively easier opponent, to secure a spot in the Champions League final. With this victory, Arsenal maintains its chances of winning both the Champions League and the Premier League titles.

The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw. The second leg, held on Tuesday at Arsenal’s home ground, Emirates Stadium, started tensely, with limited clear opportunities early on. However, in the 44th minute, Saka’s goal became the decider. After Jan Oblak saved a shot from Leandro Trossard, Saka capitalized on the rebound to score.

Atletico also created some chances. Declan Rice had to make a crucial tackle to stop Giuliano Simeone in the first half. In the second half, after Simeone had bypassed David Raya and was about to score an equalizer, Gabriel made an excellent save.

Later, Gyokeres had a golden opportunity to double Arsenal’s lead, but he squandered it by sending the ball over the bar after receiving a pass from substitute Piero Hincapie. Despite missing this chance, Arsenal kept Atletico under pressure and successfully secured a place in the Champions League final for the first time since losing to Barcelona in 2006.

Arsenal will now compete for the title on May 30 in Budapest against either Bayern Munich or PSG. They will aim to win this prestigious trophy for the first time.
