A former counterintelligence chief, Charles McGonigal, has been arrested with charges of working for Russian.

The Department of Justice announced Monday the arrest of a former top FBI official in New York because of his alleged ties to a Russian oligarch, according to The Epoch Times.

McGonigal is among the highest-ranking former FBI officials to ever have been charged with a crime, The Epoch Times said. He is charged with violating and conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act with money laundering and conspiring to commit money laundering.

McGonigal was also alleged to have ties with Oleg Deripaska. Deripaska, a Russian billionaire, has been sanctioned by the United States and was criminally charged in 2022 for violating those sanctions, it added.
