In the knockout stage of the World Cup football tournament, hosts Mexico secured a place in the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the round of 32. The match at the Azteca Stadium, delayed by an hour due to bad weather, saw co-hosts Mexico deliver an impressive performance from the start to claim victory.

Mexico will now face the winner between England and Congo on Sunday night at the prestigious Azteca Stadium for a spot in the quarterfinals. From the beginning, Mexico put Ecuador under pressure, scoring two goals in the first half. Julian Quinones opened the scoring with a swift counterattack, giving the team the lead, and nine minutes later, Raul Jimenez added a powerful second goal.

Inspired by the enthusiastic support of home fans, Mexico dominated Ecuador in the first half. However, in the second half, Mexico adopted a defensive strategy. Successfully withstanding Ecuador’s continuous pressure, the team maintained their 2-0 lead, achieving their first-ever knockout stage win. Despite a more composed performance in the second half, Ecuador failed to score.

Although Mexico had advanced past the group stage, they had remained winless in the knockout rounds until now. Finally, after nine attempts, they achieved a historic victory in the World Cup knockout stage.
