After being eliminated from the World Cup, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman has resigned, following racial abuse directed at players who missed penalties. The Netherlands were knocked out in the round of 32 after losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout.

In the match held in Monterrey, the Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw with Morocco in regular time, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the game. The Netherlands fell victim to poor penalty execution and exited the tournament.

During the penalty shootout, Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville failed to convert their shots into goals. Subsequently, they became targets of racial discrimination, hate, and derogatory comments on social media. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has condemned these incidents in strong terms.

Koeman, 63, has ended his second tenure as national team coach and hinted that his managerial career might also be coming to a close. On Instagram, he expressed, “Looking back at my career, I feel immense pride. I will cherish the moments spent with the clubs and people who gave me opportunities throughout my life.” He added, “We all dreamed of making history in the World Cup. That dream could not be fulfilled. No one is more disappointed than I am.”

As he steps away from football, Koeman mentioned that something else has become more important in his life recently. He stated, “The past few years have reminded me that there are things more important than football. Perhaps football was my life, but nothing is more valuable than health, especially when someone you love is battling a serious illness.” Koeman’s wife, Bartina, is currently fighting breast cancer.

Koeman first became the Netherlands’ coach in 2018 and was considered quite successful. He integrated talented players like Frenkie de Jong into the team and led them to impressive performances in the Nations League, defeating strong teams like France and Germany. The team also qualified for the European Championship, but after the tournament was postponed, he took the opportunity to become Barcelona’s coach.

His second stint with the Netherlands was not as smooth. He struggled to make the team play effectively, and many criticized him for adopting overly defensive strategies. Meanwhile, the KNVB has announced that it will pursue legal action against anyone making racial or hateful comments towards its players. It stated, “We find such behavior extremely abhorrent.” The association said its legal team would assess whether such expressions constitute a punishable offense under the law, and if necessary, a formal complaint will be filed with the public prosecutor’s office.

In 2021, England’s Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho also faced racial abuse after missing penalties in the European Championship final against Italy. In that incident, two individuals were sentenced to jail, while another received a suspended sentence.
