Mexico City – Co-host Mexico has become the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.

In a competitive match held at Guadalajara Stadium on Friday morning, Mexico secured its place in the final 32 (knockout stage) by defeating South Korea 1-0. This marks Mexico’s second consecutive victory. Previously, Mexico had defeated South Africa in its opening match. With 6 clear points from 2 matches in Group ‘A’, Mexico has secured its journey to the next stage with one match still remaining.

Luis Romo’s excellent goal in the 50th minute proved decisive for Mexico. Although the South Korean team led in ball possession and pass accuracy throughout the match, they failed to score.

During the game, both teams made 8 attempts on the opponent’s goal, with Mexico having 4 shots on target and South Korea 2.

Even though Mexico has reached the knockout stage, the second team to advance from Group ‘A’ is yet to be determined, making the group dynamics interesting.

South Korea, with 3 points from 2 matches, remains in second place, keeping its hopes alive. Having previously faced defeat against the Czech Republic, South Korea’s future now depends on the final match.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic and South Africa, both with 1 point each from 2 matches, still have a mathematical chance of reaching the knockout stage.

Mexico, which reached the last 16 in the 2018 World Cup, was eliminated in the group stage of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. This time, taking advantage of the home ground, Mexico has made a strong start.
